FAQ: This Sinking Island & Families

Hello everyone!

We are just two weeks away from the premiere of This Sinking Island at University Settlement! We have created this show to be Family Inclusive so we thought we'd take a few minutes to answer some important questions about the show and logistical concerns about the venue.

PERFORMANCE QUESTIONS

What is the running time?

Approximately 45 min, including post- and/or pre-show activity.

Age range?

This show has truly been created with a wide age range in mind. There's something for everyone. We use a variety of storytelling modes that all ages can enjoy:

  • Movement and Dance

  • Music

  • Gentle participation (e.g. helping to create sound effects)

Can I bring my baby?

Yes!!! Please! And we don't mind if they make some noise. We'll also designate seats near the exit for an easy escape route - just in case!

Do I have to bring a child with me in order to attend?

Nope. :)

NUTS & BOLTS

Where is the performance?

Speyer Hall at University Settlement: 184 Eldridge Street at the corner of Rivington. Click here for map.

How do I get there?

Public transit options: F to 2nd Ave; J/M/Z to Essex; B/D to Grand Street.

Is this space accessible?

Yes, there is an elevator to get to the performance space. Strollers are welcome.

Are there other things to do in the area?

You betcha! We highly recommend The Tenement Museum if you have older kids (tours usually run 60-90 min long). There's also a bevy of great restaurants. We're big fans of the Cheese Grille with it's impressive (and delicious) menu of grilled cheese sandwiches. There are also some parks with playgrounds on Forsyth Street at Eldridge or over on 2nd Ave and East Houston.

WHAT ARE PARENTS SAYING?

Here's some feedback we received from parents after our performance at the Uptown Arts Stroll in June 2017.

"I really like the way this performance allowed kids and parents to enter from different places."

"Keep making family friendly shows!"

"Beautiful work. So creative and informative and accessible for many ages."

"Loved the show!"
