In honor of International Women's Day, we are remembering the women from around the world who have inspired our plays. Our investigative plays are crafted from research and the voices of everyday people faced with extraordinary circumstances.
Our very first play was GIVE US BREAD and created from the voices of immigrant women living on the Lower East Side in 1917. We found their testimonies in the Yiddish daily Forward, the New York Times archive, in a homemaker's guide, even a cookbook.
In a beautiful way, the women from the Misr Spinning and Weaving Company in El Mahalla, Egypt, inspired two plays. Their protests, among others, are what drew us to discover the women of GIVE US BREAD, which we started creating in 2008, amidst world-wide food protests. In 2013, we turned to their story for our play MAHALLA, developed at the Jewish Plays Project Residency and then premiered in 2014 at The Berkshire Fringe.
The voices - and actions - of so many women climate refugees, especially from the island nation of Kiribati, contributed to our family inclusive play, THIS SINKING ISLAND. The script is also now available on the New Play Exchange.
Our award-winning play ARTEMISIA'S INTENT brings to life the work and words of 17th century painter Artemisia Gentileschi. Despite 400 years between Artemisia's life and ours, her experience as a woman making a career in the arts and facing sexual assault are incredibly relevant today.
